January 25, 2005 Unlike cyclical years of the past, 2004 was a year when Eucheuma seaweed raw material prices saw a steady rise month after month. This was because of strong worldwide demand for seaweeds and carrageenan, at a time of limited seaweed supply. Seaweed exporters and carrageenan producers faced a short and unstable supply of seaweeds and intense competition drove market prices on a steady uptrend, while general quality of seaweeds from the farms suffered. In 2004, many players in the market experienced recurring problems of empty warehouses and shutdowns due to a lack of raw material. A few had to permanently stop operations as high costs led to continued losses, which could not be sustained. The outlook for 2005 points to continued strong demand. Seaweed supply is expected to improve with the coming of sunnier weather in the next few months but almost everyone’s warehouses are empty these days. Stronger players in the market will be in a better position to replenish warehouse stocks before the rainy season comes in June.
